Workgroup – October 5th, 2020

Transcriber: The Clockwork Bird
Editors: Artorias, Puck

Coding/ Tools/Solving:

Taiiwo – Convenience of hashing algorithms in one place being executable at any time – Spoon made progress on the algorithms/possibly in reach of Taiiwo’s 3 week expectation (which was contingent on others).

  • Posited – Blake 1 or Blake 2 in addition to the other hash functions. By vote- Which hashes do (we collectively) think are the best bet?
  • Function Wrapped Hash Implementation
  • Rune Transcription and Rune Extraction can be done in timely manner
  • Stream where Mort’s tools and others are played around with

Community Work:

Puck will be using the time before people have fully joined scheduled solving sessions to answer newcomer questions.

  • Sitting in Workgroup on a more regular basis to attract activity
  • Organizing Sessions in addition to Solving sessions
    • List of viable ideas condensed into an attackable form
  • Community ARG competition
  • New Twitter created: @cicadasolvers
  • New Reddit wherein well documented solving attempts are grabbed from new solving channel: /r/cicadaattempts
    • This new channel has a slow mode on it
    • Discussed how users will be cited, etc.

-having people sit in vc whenever they are solving
-more solving sessions organized by people in more time zones

other:
-conversation about gp rune sums, specifically if any sum(set of consecutive runes) == sum(all other runes) exist, and it seems like no
also, in the future, better notes will be taken on these sessions (I promise lol)

Impromptu Workgroup – September 28th, 2020

DExEU, renowned solver and IRC aficionado, graces Discord voicechat plebs with his presence. Some general solving discussion ensues, with most of the admin and moderation team participating.

-DExEU discusses his experience with GBS. Very high opinion of them and their other work.

-Discussion of whether or not cicada may still monitor progress on LP. Speculation on whether the deep web page that LP page 56 references still exists.

-Discussion of possibility that LP has been solved. Some disagreement, though multiple users think it could have been solved independently and privately.
–DExEU expresses belief that LP has likely been solved, and the solution not shared.

-Discussion of surveillance (or lack thereof) placed (or not placed) upon particular solvers.

-Discussion of revamping the uncovering cicada wiki’s PGP page (thanks ctvrty)

Monthly Voice Session 1 Recap – January 5th, 2020

Idea 1: Cribbing
Description: plaintext and ciphertext used to try and find a code
Ways to solve: checking all possibilities of sentences a page could be based on the runes and words cicada has given us

Idea 2: Greyscale
Description: trying to use the greyscale as a way to decrypt the pages
Ways to solve: manipulating color profiles

Idea 3: Hill cipher
Description: decrypting with matrices
Ways to solve: using magic squares in LP in hill cipher

Smaller ideas:
list of all possible ways to solve LP (message Puck to give ideas)

Ways to get people involved:
-sit in discord voice channels when solving
-youtube series
-podcast?

Other things discussed:

  1. Community behavior (suggestions, not rules)
-when people say an idea, don’t reject it, support it
-if somebody is annoying you, don’t start an argument in the channel, only in DMs
  2. Random off topic things

We discussed ways to solve – the ideas list was updated
*we discussed how to increase turnout – notably a youtube channel that I may make
We answered questions people had
We discussed what we did throughout the month (which wasn’t much lol)
-I have been consistent in updating the list of possible ways to solve LP
-I tried cribbing
-my attempts at the first 10 words on page 54 failed
-we probably need a new wordlist
we talked about Taiiwo’s tagging system

What will be happening hopefully by next monthly voice session:
list of all books referenced by cicada
all unsolved pages with runes and values along with the sum of the page and the sum’s factors and totients

I would also like to add a page dedicated to the different interpretations of the A WARNING page, but it’s not a priority

  3. conversation about base encryption
  4. we talked about the hash theoretically could be on an LP page because it is a page and was posted on the deep web
  5. rocket talk
  6. mod talk
  7. going through r/cicada and the wiki
  8. base 60 idea was thrown out (thanks mortlach)
  9. wiki analytics

Monthly Voice Session Recap – September 12th, 2020
  1. historical link on “knock on the sky, …” but it wasnt solving related
  2. mobius function discussion
  3. -talking about how to perform it
  4. -discussion of minimizing the variables, so to speak, like only changing one of the steps where a cipher could be performed
  5. little conversation about 3301’s role in real world now
  6. connection to cicada.berkeley.edu – we pretty much agreed that it isnt anything really
  7. talking about the community and how newcomers get integrated into the community and how they form opinions about 3301/the puzzles
  8. question: how much of an impact has 3301 had on the world/people’s lives? – not really solving, honestly just an interesting discussion lol

Solving Session 2 Recap – January 26th, 2020

we worked on/looked at this graph: https://bionsgadgets.appspot.com/gadget_forms/acarefstats.html
the book referenced in the above website: https://b-ok.cc/book/852591/c08a8f
army manual from the graph site: http://www.umich.edu/~umich/fm-34-40-2/
mortlach’s forum post: http://cicada3301.boards.net/thread/36/decrypt-runes-1-basic-tools

explanation of stuff on the graph:
index of coincidence:
The index of coincidence provides a measure of how likely it is to draw two matching letters by randomly selecting two letters from a given text. The chance of drawing a given letter in the text is (number of times that letter appears / length of the text).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index_of_coincidence
boorishpea’s code: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/613165379065217025/671102059151622164/unknown.png
https://www.dcode.fr/index-coincidence

Kappa value:
Cohen’s kappa coefficient is a statistic that is used to measure inter-rater reliability for qualitative items. It is generally thought to be a more robust measure than simple percent agreement calculation, as κ takes into account the possibility of the agreement occurring by chance.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cohen’s_kappa

also we found some possible words for 0.jpg

Solving Session Recap – July 1st, 2020

A lot of the drawings are done on canvas – the shading pattern is indicative of that

Interesting finds on the crosses:
-The dots on the right of the cross in between the bottom two rungs are placed digitally – there is a clean circle around them, also they are slightly off color = could be some sort of shift
-Those dots also have a very similar proportion to the dots in each intersection of the rungs with the vertical line

Solving Session Recap – July 5th, 2020

we looked at the dots on the cross on 0.jpg, and figured out they are in a proportion for the morse code letter F
we tried to find an image that fit the mayfly, and failed
a conversation on the 3 dots on 33.jpg and 39.jpg and how the middle one is similarly offset slightly
we lined the page art dots up with dots in a dot matrix and used that pattern (when rotated 180 degrees) on the matrices of the solved pages, and no interesting gematria sums came out of that – https://imgur.com/a/QaDruvQ

Solving Session Recap – July 11th, 2020

We tried to modify the mobius function in a way to produce binary strings that could hopefully be used on LP – nothing interesting came out of it just yet, but I (and likely others) will be putting more work into it at a later time
mortlach showed some graphs: https://imgur.com/a/eaNe4sn and a more interesting one here: https://imgur.com/a/g0JlfyN
discussed some program results of one modified mobius function
discussed possibility of just using mobius function in base 3 instead of base 2 because it gives out 3 values originally
talked about the 2016 clue – the general consensus was that the “seek and you will be found” is the more important clue, here is mortlach’s take:
“words are map – we’re working with the words of LP, not the side images etc
mean is the road – find the meaning of the words (i.e. decrypt them)
numbers are the direction – its a math based puzzle
though it is ambiguous, so could be hint to many things”
talked about the DJU BEI AE 7 rune repeat

Solving Session Recap – August 9th, 2020

talked about a tagging system for quickly finding ideas

Solving Session Recap – August 29th, 2020

mobius function + fibonacci numbers as shifts – will be continued further in another vc
discussion about greyscale lp images having same/larger file sizes than color ones – a good lead because it doesnt make sense for that to happen
talked about why lp outguess false positives start and end with the same data – because top and bottom of pages are identical, white boxes of pixels

Solving Session Recap – September 11th, 2020

preparing to try mobius function and the fibonacci spiral on 15.jpg as shifts, started work on program to do this
reorganization of person notes for later usage

honestly we got sidetracked a little, instead talking about privacy, which was pretty interesting, and a few other things

Solving Session Recap – September 26th, 2020

-new idea: mobius function of previous shift + shift of current rune – would conform to the “memory of previous” rune hypothesis gaining traction recently
-agrippa’s modular exponentiation and encryption scheme
-rune history conversation, not really solving related though
-probability of a random number within certain intervals being prime:
[1, 100] 25%
[101, 999] 15.8%
[1000, 9999] 11.7%
[10000, 99999] 9.29%

Solving Session Recap – October 9th, 2020

Transcriber: Puck

-taiiwo’s hash checker now has spectral hash, so there are 6 left to add
-discussion of hash collisions, specifically the misleading information they could present with the hash

-work on finding patterns within fibonacci numbers
-goal: make mobius function calculation of really large fibonacci numbers faster, which would allow for quick execution of the idea that combines mobius function with fibonacci numbers in a cipher
